From Ideas to Products: A Week at Startup Kids Camp!
What happens when kids turn their ideas into real products? This week at Startup Kids Camp, our young entrepreneurs explored the exciting world of business, creativity, and teamwork as they took an idea from the very beginning all the way to a real Maker Market!
The week started with learning the basics of business. Students explored what makes a product valuable, how pricing and profit work, and what it takes to run a small business. They then formed their own companies, chose company names and logos, and took on different roles such as CEO, CFO, Marketing Officer, Operations Officer, and Product Designer.
As the week continued, students learned how to add value to a product by improving its quality, appearance, packaging, convenience, and customer experience. They put these ideas into practice during a fun lemonade lab, where teams created and tested their own recipes before voting on the best flavors and most creative products.
On Thursday, creativity met science! Students explored how scientific ideas can become products, created mini hot-air balloons, and worked on product names, logos, labels, instructions, and packaging. They also calculated material costs, set prices, and estimated potential profits as they developed their business plans.
The week ended with the highlight everyone had been preparing for—the Maker Market! Teams worked together to make their products, finish their packaging, decorate their booths, create price signs and promotional materials, and practice welcoming customers. In the afternoon, families and friends joined the market, where students introduced their businesses, presented their products, answered questions, and experienced what it was like to be young entrepreneurs.
From brainstorming and budgeting to designing, making, and selling, our campers experienced the full journey from idea to product. Along the way, they practiced creativity, problem-solving, communication, financial thinking, and teamwork—and most importantly, learned that a great idea can become something real when you work together and keep improving it.
What an inspiring week of creating, collaborating, and dreaming big!
